Come Sinners and Anoint Jesus' Feet

A Picture of Salvation in Luke 7:37-48

Luke 7 37-38:

Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of ointment.   Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.

The woman came a sinner

This woman was a sinner.  She had many sins that required forgiveness.  Her sins were many as omnisciently testified by Jesus "her sins were many."

The woman came with a reputation

The Pharisee knew of this woman and her sins.  She had a horrible reputation of a sinner.  Her sins were blatant and obvious.  The Pharisee knew this woman of the city was a sinner.  Her sins were most likely that of a prostitute or an adulteress.  Her reputation was so public and so vile in the eyes of this Pharisee and was so disgusted by her presence; he wondered why Jesus was letting her touch him (v. 39).

The woman came uninvited

The woman was such a vile sinner with a bad reputation; the Pharisee wondered why Jesus didn't even know it.  He doubted Jesus was a prophet and thought Jesus didn't even perceive she was who she was.  The Pharisee thought this woman was not deserving of even being in the presence of Jesus or the Pharisee's house.  She came uninvited.

The woman came boldly

The woman came boldly, though.  She came uninvited, but boldly entered the house and went about anointing Jesus feet.  She didn't need an invitation.  She didn't need convincing.  She didn't need the "Roman Road."  She didn't need coaxing.  She didn't need man's permission or acceptance.  She came boldly.

The woman came in true repentance

The woman came to Jesus sorry for her sin in true repentance.  She came weeping.  In fact, she wept for so long, Jesus told a story to Simon the Pharisee, and when he finished the story, she was still weeping, so sorry for her sin.

The woman came to worship Jesus

She came with an alabaster jar of ointment or perfume.  This was probably a very precious possession of hers.  She came on her face before Jesus, kissing his feet, weeping, worshipping Him.

The woman came lovingly

The woman washed Jesus feet with her tears, the ultimate act of kindness and love.  She kissed his feet.  She couldn’t stop kissing his feet.

The woman came in faith

The woman knew Jesus.

The woman came forgiven

Jesus knew her.

The woman came for His Glory

Psalm 23:5-6 says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.  You anoint my head with oil.  My cup runs over.  Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life,    and I will dwell in Yahweh's house forever.”

Romans 10:14-15:

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in him whom they have not heard? How will they hear without a preacher?  And how will they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

"How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good

News of peace,

who bring glad tidings of good things!"

Luke 7:46-48:

“’You didn't anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.  Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.’"  He said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’"

Isaiah 52:7:  How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of good, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

What about you?  Are you in need of a Savior?  Are you a vile sinner in need of forgiveness of sins?  Do you have faith that Jesus will wash away all of your sins?  If you are in need of a beautiful Savior, come sinner, and anoint the feet of the King of all Glory.  His richness of lovingkindness and mercy endures forever and ever.  Amen.
